Ladder Safety

Selecting the correct ladder and using proper technique are the first steps to completing a project safely. Use the guidelines below before starting your next project.

  • Choose the right ladder. Make sure the ladder is suited for the job you plan to do and verify the load capacity.
  • Before using a ladder inspect for cracks or broken joints. This is an essential part to ladder safety.
  • Look up! Avoid electrical hazards by checking for power lines before you handle the ladder.
  • Place your ladder on a flat surface. Never put a ladder on top of an object to make it higher.
  • Use the 1:4 ratio. Place the base of the ladder 1 foot away for every 4 feet of height to the point of building contact.
  • Always face the ladder when climbing up or down. This will help you keep your weight distributed evenly and make it easier to maintain your balance.
  • Use 3 point-of-contact climb. Use two hands and a foot, or two feet and a hand on a ladder at all times.
  • Never stand on top of the stepladder or on the paint shelf.
  • Never leave ladders unattended – kids love them.

If you feel tired or dizzy, or are prone to losing your balance, do not use a ladder. Ladders are dangerous if they are not used properly; however, by following a few simple guidelines you lower the risk of injury and you can complete your project safely.
